VyOS in 2023: multi-year subscriptions, future plans, and more

Hello, Community!

This mail contains essential information about subscriptions.

We are already two months into 2023 and expect this year to impact the VyOS project significantly!

Not only is the project passing ten years mark, and a 1.4 LTS release is planned for this year, but more crucial things are also happening in the background.

Since we made our first commercially-supported 1.2.0 LTS release in 2019, VyOS has steadily grown in all dimensions. We aren’t only talking about our revenue, customer count, and other business performance indicators — our team is growing, our open-source user and contributor community is also growing, and thus our responsibility is growing.

When we started, we aimed to have a network operating system that we could use and improve for our needs. A few years later, VyOS was adopted by companies that we thought would never look at it, in roles we never thought it would fulfill, from critical communication infrastructure to network engineer education and training.

That brings a new set of challenges — how to keep VyOS available, open-source, and sustainably funded; how to make it better suited to environments where it’s now taking hold; and how to ensure that its development direction reflects the best interests of our Community.

So here are a few things we have in the pipeline this year.

Hello, community!

It's been a while since our last update, so it is time for the progress update for June. Our schedule was definitely disrupted, but we never stopped working on improving VyOS, and we are getting back to posting development updated every month. Thank you for your patience!

In June we added a few new options for firewall, brought back the event handler — a feature we all missed, and thanks to the VyOS community, found and fixed some bugs. Read on for details!

Hello again!

Another month has passed, and now it's time for the April update. The most important news of the past month includes a VyOS 1.3.0-rc4 release candidate and multiple improvements in the 1.4/Sagitta branch, including support for running containers on VyOS (via Podman). Correction: A previous version of this blogpost was marked "May 2021" instead of "April 2021".

The winter break is over and the first month of the new year has passed. As usual, we’ve been busy with improving VyOS and its infrastructure. The main highlights of this month include a new website specially for community members and contributors available at vyos.net, introduction of monthly snapshots (finally!), and quite a few development updates.

The year 2020 has been a productive year for VyOS. We are happy to see new contributors join and work with us; happy to see customers go with VyOS when they need an affordable, flexible, and open solution for increased networking needs; happy to see VyOS gather momentum. Here’s a brief recap of the past year, and a bit of recent plans.

Hi everyone,

This may be our most delayed update in history, but as they say, "better late than never".

Early in November, United States elections have been a focus of attention, especially for our American colleagues and customers, so we decided to postpone posting this update. Then came the time of season-appropriate "black Friday" and "cyber Monday" posts and the usual stream of distractions that comes when everyone is trying to get things done before the year ends. Still, there's lots of news to share, and the time to do it has come—read on!

More than a half of this year has passed. The year started busy for us and there’s no slowing down. We are glad to be helping people and companies stay connected and cut connectivity costs, now that connectivity is a hard necessity, and we are also grateful to all companies that choose our services and to all contributors who send us code, documentation, and bug reports.

It’s supposed to be a slow news season now, but we have two important updates and quite some progress with 1.3 release development to share, as well as some new partnership and sponsorships announcements.

As usual, we've been quite busy. First of all, sorry for the nonsensical "VyOS News Digest". The webmasters we hired to help us look after the social media accounts posted things they shouldn't have posted. It's an unfortunate incident and we regret failing to prevent such a drop in signal to noise ratio of this blog. We promise that won't happen again.

Now to the real VyOS news: let's see what we've been working on and done in June...

VyOS Project May 2020 Update

As usual, May was a busy month for VyOS. Originally we’ve planned a soft freeze of the 1.3 branches for early May, but it didn’t work as planned—in reality May brought us a lot of new features from both community contributors and maintainers. However, it also brought us a lot of fixes, refactoring, and polish, so we are actually closer to the stable 1.3 release than before.

Hello Community!

Here is the April update from the VyOS project.

Despite the global crisis, we are working on the project and expanding our services. There’s some good progress towards the future 1.3 release and more work on the 1.2 LTS branch.

There are also multiple new partnerships with hardware manufacturers and cloud providers that will bring VyOS to more users and expand the range of supported platforms.

We are grateful to all community members who participate, to people who support us on Patreon, and to customers who trust VyOS and use our services!

VyOS Certifications - VyOS Certified Networks Engineer (VCNE)

VyOS certifications for network engineers is one of the hot topics during the last years. Not only people were asking us when certification will be available, we've been also seeing more job offers that require VyOS skills. It took us a while to prepare everything but now it’s time to officially announce the launch of the first certification: VyOS Certified Networks Engineer.

VyOS Project 2019 December Update

It's almost winter holidays time already! It's been a great year for VyOS, with many big improvements in the code, and more community contributions to the code and the documentation than ever.

There are some big changes coming too, including:

Rolling release builds based on Debian Buster
New, clearer subscription structure and pricing for corporate users.
New ways for community members to support the project on Patreon and buymeacoffee.com and get access to LTS images and a community support forum in exchange.
An official list of compatible devices to make it easier to choose hardware to run VyOS on.

Everyone is probably aware that VyOS was built upon a codebase that hasn't aged well. VyOS 1.2.0 was all about a (sometimes painful) base system and codebase refresh, but the good thing is that as we get rid of the old code and replace it with modern, redesigned alternatives, new things become possible.

We have some great news to share!

As some of you may already know, we are planning to run virtual meeting event for VyOS devs and users in near future.

May admit that this summer is productive in all aspects:

Tremendous work towards VyOS 1.2 done and we going to present 1.2.0 beta 2 in some weeks! Thanks, to our super team!

We revived OVA distribution of VyOS some months ago and continued work in the direction of extensive VMWare Platform support; we also plan to deliver supported images for all other standard hypervisors like KVM, MS Hyper-V and VyOS on clouds markets for AWS, Azure, GCE.

VyOS is now available on SolidRun ClearFog device, credits for this great work to UnicronNL, this opens new applications for VyOS.

Ansible starting from version 2.2 able to configure VyOS, so if you using Ansible, give it a try! We on other hand working on standalone management library for Python.

We receive many requests regarding GUI, and yes we are listening to them. Last four months we dedicated a lot of time to studies regarding possible ways of delivery such UI. Apart from technical challenges, there are other problems to take into account(like service providers don't want GUI, while SMBs and ROBOs show high demand). We are working to bring satisfaction to all users without sacrifices from any side. So basically yes, it will be GUI in near future, but there are not ETAs for now.

We believe that affordable open source routing platform and NFV should be accessible to everyone out there
