Hello, Community! The holiday season in the Northern hemisphere is over and it's very visible in the commit log. There are lots of things that happened in VyOS in September — that includes a new, more performant kernel mode NetFlow sensor; the equally long-awaited support for using firewall groups in WAN load balancing rules; improvements that will hopefully make config corruption on power loss very unlikely; TLS support for syslog; and many more smaller features and fixes.

VyOS Ansible Collection 6.0.0 release

We are happy to announce the next major 6.0.0 release of the VyOS Ansible Collection. It is now available from Ansible Galaxy and is also a certified collection for the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform.

If you are an active Ansible user, you surely noticed that the Ansible collection for VyOS lost its momentum at some point and remained stagnant for quite some time. Earlier this year, we had the repositories transferred to our organization on GitHub, took over the development, and formed a small team of dedicated maintainers — thanks to Gaige Paulsen and Evgeny Molotkov who joined us and took up the hard work!

Now, after over two years of community work and our own improvements and fixes, a new release of the vyos.vyos Ansible collection is finally available to all users!

This release brings proper support for the current 1.4 LTS release and the upcoming VyOS 1.5.

It also still fully supports VyOS 1.3.x but will be the last release to officially support it since VyOS 1.3.x reached its end of life this year. This release may still work for VyOS 1.2.x and older, but if you run into problems, you should switch to version 5.0.0, since it was the last version to officially support those legacy versions.

We are happy to announce that the VyOS 1.4.0-epa1 image is now available to customers and contributors (and everyone can build it from the sagitta branch of vyos-build, of course)! If you are new to VyOS, the "EPA" part means "early production access" — that's the final stage when the release is already used in production by a subset of users and on our proper infrastructure. We declare it as a new Long Term Support release. This release has been in development since early 2022 and offers a large number of new features, plus some redesigns and removals.

Many people ask us when VyOS 1.4 will become a stable release. Some people have even started using development builds of the Sagitta branch in production — we'd like to remind everyone that you should only do it at your own risk, but we are certainly happy that we added so many features that people want to use. We assure you that 1.4 is well on track to become a new LTS by the end of this year. A few things are still missing, though — let's discuss them.

Zenbleed and OpenSSH agent vulnerabilities and their impact on VyOS

Recently, two severe vulnerabilities were discovered by security researchers. One of them is nicknamed Zenbleed (CVE-2023-20593) and affects a number of AMD CPUs, the other one (CVE-2023-38408) affects OpenSSH. Both are potentially very serious but, luckily, don't affect most VyOS users. We will include fixes for them in our next releases, of course, and we can provide hotfix packages to people who need them now.

VyOS 1.2.9, the last routine GA release in the 1.2.x line. It may not be the last release in that line in general — if anyone finds an exploitable vulnerability, the team will make a security release to fix it, at least until the end of 2023. We are making the 1.2.9 images available free of charge to everyone starting from the new year. We are also grateful to all our customers and contributors who make the VyOS project possible.

Recent OpenSSL vulnerabilities do not affect any VyOS versions

Many people are concerned about recently announced OpenSSL vulnerabilities (CVE-2022-3786 and CVE-2022-3602). However, none of the VyOS versions ever released are vulnerable. Those vulnerabilities affect only OpenSSL version 3.0.x, while VyOS uses 1.1.1n in the 1.3.x LTS line and in the nightly builds of the upcoming 1.4 release, and that version is not vulnerable.

Writing VyOS operational mode commands just got better!

Writing scripts for operational mode commands used to require quite a bit of tedious to handle sub-commands and options, and there were no guidelines for an optimal script structure. Now we can automatically generate both command-line options and GraphQL resolvers thanks to Python 3.5+ introspection for type annotations, so you will never have to write that boring code by hand. The hardware crisis isn’t getting any better. If anything, there’s a chance that it’s only the beginning.

It’s not yet certain whether high prices and shortages will become the new normal or not. Still, it’s certain that keeping old hardware in use for longer and reusing old hardware for different purposes has always been the environmentally-responsible approach.

It’s just that until recently, that approach was mostly practiced by environmentally-conscious people and people who simply couldn’t afford to purchase new hardware on a whim. Companies with big budgets often looked down upon it. Well, now the economic reality forces more people to make decisions that are also environmentally friendly. Still, if people can easily see whether they can reuse a certain box for VyOS, it will simplify those decisions.

Microsoft Azure is one of the biggest cloud service providers nowadays. VyOS is featured as Microsoft preferred solution and many Azure users are already leveraging VyOS capabilities for connecting to other clouds, private data centers, and on-premises networks. As you may recall, this year VyOS achieved the co-sell ready status with Microsoft:

All VyOS on Azure consumption count toward your commitments
Microsoft CSPs receiving additional incentives when selling VyOS

We also support VyOS on Azure Stack Hub. In other words, the adoption and recognition of VyOS among Azure users are growing and we are happy to see that. Since VPN gateway is one of the most popular use cases, we'll show an example of how to connect your on-prem environment to Azure with VyOS.

Hello!

VyOS 1.2.7 LTS release is now available to subscribers, and everyone can build an equivalent image from our repositories. This release took a while to complete, but it isn't a small maintenance release either: it includes multiple bug fixes (41 resolved issues in total) and some feature backports from the upcoming 1.3/equuleus branch. The highlights include a kernel mode L2TP implementation that makes L2TP 2x faster, a command to export a part of the configuration to JSON, Linux kernel updated to 4.19.176 and more. This is also the first release that officially supports container guest mode.

VyOS 1.2.7-epa1

First, VyOS 1.2.7-epa1 is now available to subscribers, and everyone can build an equivalent image from our repositories. It's a rather big release, with multiple bug fixes and some backports from the 1.3/equuleus branch. We don’t expect any major issues with it, but we encourage everyone to test it on non-critical routers first. If no issues are found within a week or so, we will call if a 1.2.7 release.

There is a popular fiction that if you have a good project, a community automatically forms around it and gives it the publicity it deserves. In reality, it varies. It’s more than possible to have a lot of publicity without any project at all, as we see with a lot of startups that turn out to be vaporware. They get their publicity by talking about the supposed product everywhere.

The reality is that good projects also get their publicity… by talking about their project everywhere. The more you talk about it, the more visible you are. In CatB, Eric Raymond admits that he “grew his beta list by adding to it everyone who contacted him about fetchmail”—a practice that looks borderline spammy.

Our previous post regarding the prospect of introducing telemetry ended up pretty divisive. Apart from the sensitive nature of the topic itself, there were some poor wording and poll design mistakes that made it look more evil than we ever planned it to be. Anonymous stats collection from VyOS routers: we need your opinions!

The T-word. Telemetry. Everyone hates it, not least because the most widely known implementations are unambiguously evil. We hate collection and sale of personal information as much as you do, so before we dive deeper into the subject, let’s set it straight: we will never collect any personally identifiable information from VyOS devices without explicit consent, ever.

However, not collecting anything at all does limit our ability to correctly prioritize issues. Now we are thinking of including anonymous stats collection into VyOS images (rolling and LTS alike) by default, and it needs a broad and serious discussion with the community. Our preliminary plan is to enable collection of basic usage stats by default, and provide CLI options to enable more detailed reporting. For that we need to know what people wouldn't hesitate to share by default, so we included a poll in this post.

VyOS Project May 2020 Update

As usual, May was a busy month for VyOS. Originally we’ve planned a soft freeze of the 1.3 branches for early May, but it didn’t work as planned—in reality May brought us a lot of new features from both community contributors and maintainers. However, it also brought us a lot of fixes, refactoring, and polish, so we are actually closer to the stable 1.3 release than before.

VyOS Foundation Announcement

As you may already know, the VyOS project was started as a response to the cancellation of Vyatta Core, an open-source version of Vyatta that we used and loved. We have succeeded in this and seven years later we have a truly open-source network OS that people rely on. Here is the April update from the VyOS project.

Despite the global crisis, we are working on the project and expanding our services. There’s some good progress towards the future 1.3 release and more work on the 1.2 LTS branch.

There are also multiple new partnerships with hardware manufacturers and cloud providers that will bring VyOS to more users and expand the range of supported platforms.

VyOS 1.2.5 maintenance release

VyOS 1.2.5 maintenance release is finally available. Subscribers can download it from the support portal, and everyone can build it from the Crux branch and cloud images currently under marketplace reviews. It’s a rather big release, with 46 resolved issues.

As always, we are very grateful to everyone who sent us patches, reported bugs and supported us financially. Without you, the continued development of VyOS wouldn’t be possible! Thank you!

VyOS Project March 2020 Update

As usual, we’ve been busy working on the 1.2.x LTS release and on the future 1.3.0 version. One important update is that VyOS 1.2.5-epa2 (early production access) image is now available to subscribers, and everyone can build it from the Crux branch. It includes latest stable release of the FreeRangeRouting protocol stack and multiple bug fixes. We are running that image on our own routers, and if no more serious issues are discovered, we’ll make the final 1.2.5 release and keep working on 1.2.6.

VyOS 1.2.0 was all about a (sometimes painful) base system and codebase refresh, but the good thing is that as we get rid of the old code and replace it with modern, redesigned alternatives, new things become possible.
