VyOS Project 2019 - March Update
Hello, Gents!
It’s been a while from the last update so I thought it’s a good time to share some news.
The team is busy as always, so much done already and much more to be done yet, sometimes it looks like the quantity of the tasks is infinite (and it is). That of course not stopping us, we like challenges and it brings lot of fun too. So here some more info below
VyOS 1.2.1
Expected in above 2 weeks. Fixes, FRR 7.0, more fixes, updated intel drivers, more firmwares, improvements in VTI, mellanox drivers, and more, you can follow and participate at phabricator. Hopefully all recall that participation in effort gives benefits
Community and contributions
Always stating that VyOS is community driven and glad that so many people and companies joined our effort. Especially proud that VyOS used and supported by some big known companies, good for project! We continue to provide access to VyOS LTS for education organizations and nonprofit organizations this also very important, but really we can see VyOS across different industries that confirming demand for software like VyOS.
Probably will do separate post about how/where people use VyOS
Hardware / Hypervisors
Lot of work happens on this front while it not that good visible probably.
So far we got several things done
- Nutanix AHV validation passed (raw image expected with 1.2.1)
- VMWare validation in final stage (new OVA expected with 1.2.1)
- Hyper-V image will be available with 1.2.1 release
For hardware we now working on images for Supermicro / Edge-Core / DellEMC and Protectli
All this process not really fast enough, however, it happening now so it’s good.
You can support us by participating in project or buying subscription (or both which is better)
Clouds
Work in progress, i will do separate about clouds because we have lot new stuff there!
In short - all major clouds covered (AWS, Azure, GCP coming). Cloud-init images for OpenStack will be availalb e as part of 1.2.1 release
Certification / learning materials / documentation
We almost ready with certification labs, and will be opening proctored online exams for VyOS Network Engineer Certification, keep follow announcements. Team works also on training materials, once ready, will be available in same way as images. Same materials will be used for on demand trainings and provided to training partners.
As of latest we decided to change approach in documentation organization and working
https://vyos.readthedocs.io - will replace wiki.vyos.net, this likely will take some time but we already start work
Everyone can contribute via https://github.com/vyos/vyos-documentation, we currently work on improvements and welcoming you to join.
Another place where you will be able to find samples and solution specific documentations will be our https://support.vyos.io portal which also is center of our support system.
Subscriptions and free access
You can support project by joining our effort - active contributors have access to LTS builds and HotFix releases while participating. You will need to spend some time, but it’s completely free of charge.
Alternatively, you can get paid subscription either professional or corporate and support our effort financially, of course you can combine both if you wish too.
We also glad to offer free access to nonprofit organizations and educational and research facilities and of course to other open source projects/developers
Team looking for new people
If you missed previous post, we looking to expand our team, this time, apart from network engineers we also looking for software developers to join. If you think it´s something interesting for you or maybe you know someone who can be interested? Submit application and we can talk.
